This means that unlike the earlier widespread federal stimulus packages, there won’t be a universal fourth check from the federal government this year. The federal government, which issued three rounds of stimulus checks with the last one distributed in March 2021, has not planned any new federal stimulus checks for 2023. You may have recently come across multiple viral posts on social media claiming there will be a 4th stimulus check coming your way.Īccording to USAToday, they have received official communication via email from an IRA spokesperson, as well as many other state representatives that debunk these claims. The Mount: A Telescope's Most Under-Appreciated Asset Most types of telescopes come supplied with one or two eyepieces you change the magnification by switching eyepieces with different focal lengths. For example, if a telescope has a focal length of 500 mm and a 25-mm eyepiece, then the magnification is 500/25, or 20×. This is simply the objective's focal length divided by that of the eyepiece, which you'll find on its barrel. The objective's focal length (F or FL) is the key to determining the telescope's magnification ("power"). Watch an animation of light passing through a compound telescope. Compound (or catadioptric) telescopes, which use a combination of lenses and mirrors, offer compact tubes and relatively light weight two popular designs you'll often see are called Schmidt-Cassegrains and Maksutov-Cassegrains.Watch an animation of light passing through a reflector. For a given aperture, these are generally the least expensive type, but you'll need to adjust the optical alignment every now and then - more often if you bump it around a lot - but that adjustment (called collimation) is straightforward. Reflectors gather light using a mirror at the rear of the main tube.Watch an animation of light passing through a refractor. In refractor lingo, an apochromat offers better optical quality (and is more expensive) than an achromat of the same size. While generally low maintenance, they quickly get expensive as the aperture increases. Refractors have a lens at the front of the tube - it's the type you're probably most familiar with. You'll encounter three basic types of telescopes: The three basic telescope designs use different optics to achieve the same result: making distant objects look bigger and brighter than they appear to your eye. And even then, you'd need to wait for a night when the observing conditions are perfect. So you'd need a 12-inch-wide scope to get a decent image at 600×. For most purposes, a telescope's maximum useful magnification is 50 times its aperture in inches (or twice its aperture in millimeters). And regardless of how bright or dark your skies are, the view through a telescope with plenty of aperture is more impressive than the view of the same object through a smaller scope.Īvoid telescopes that are advertised by their magnification - especially implausibly high powers like 600×. But you'd probably need a 6- or 8-inch telescope (like the one shown at right) to see those same galaxies from a typical suburban backyard. For example, from a dark location you can spot dozens of galaxies beyond our own Milky Way through a scope with an aperture of 80 mm (3.1 inches). But a good small scope can still show you plenty - especially if you live far from city lights. Dobsonian telescopes, which are reflectors with a simple mount, provide lots of aperture at relatively low cost.Ī larger aperture lets you see fainter objects and finer detail than a smaller one can. As a rule of thumb, your telescope should have at least 2.8 inches (70 mm) aperture - and preferably more. The aperture's diameter (D) will be expressed either in millimeters or, less commonly, in inches (1 inch equals 25.4 mm). Look for the telescope's specifications near its focuser, at the front of the tube, or on the box. The most important characteristic of a telescope is its aperture - the diameter of its light-gathering lens or mirror, often called the objective. Aperture: A Telescope's Most Important Feature But don't overlook portability and convenience - the best scope for you is the one you'll actually use. And all other things being equal, big scopes show more and are easier to use than small ones, as we'll see below. The telescope you want has two essentials: high-quality optics and a steady, smoothly working mount. Armed with these few basic types of telescopes, you'll have a good idea what to look for (and what to avoid) when scouring the marketplace for your new scope. So here is a guide to help you make sense of the "universe" of telescope models available today. Many (arguably most) good starter scopes cost $400 or more, though some superb choices are available for under $250. Instead, you should choose a telescope based on your observing interests, lifestyle, and budget. It is the most recent winter storm to rank as a Category 5 winter storm, and the first to do so since the 2011 Groundhog Day blizzard.Ī relatively minor storm ahead of the blizzard, similar to an Alberta clipper, caught numerous drivers off-guard, producing a brief period of heavy snow during rush hour in the Mid-Atlantic region on January 20. The storm ranked as a Category 5 "extreme" event for the Northeast on the Regional Snowfall Index, and a Category 4 event for the Southeast. Total economic losses are estimated between $500 million and $3 billion. and one each in Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Massachusetts, and Ohio. At least 55 people were killed in storm-related incidents: Twelve in Virginia nine in Pennsylvania six each in New Jersey, New York, and North Carolina four in South Carolina three each in Maryland and Washington, D.C. Ice- and snow-covered roads led to hundreds of incidents across the affected region, several of which resulted in deaths and injuries. Seven states observed snowfall in excess of 30 in (76 cm), with accumulations peaking at 42 in (110 cm) in Glengary, West Virginia. The storm was given various unofficial names, including Winter Storm Jonas, Blizzard of 2016, and Snowzilla. A travel ban was instituted for New York City and Newark, New Jersey, for January 23–24. Thousands of National Guardsmen were placed on standby, and states deployed millions of gallons of brine and thousands of tons of road salt to lessen the storm's effect on roadways. More than 13,000 flights were cancelled in relation to the storm, with effects rippling internationally. Approximately 103 million people were affected by the storm, with 33 million people placed under blizzard warnings. declared a state of emergency in anticipation of significant snowfall and blizzard conditions. On January 20–22, the governors of eleven states and the mayor of Washington, D.C. Winter weather expert Paul Kocin described the blizzard as "kind of a top-10 snowstorm". Meteorologists indicated that a resultant storm could produce more than 2 ft (61 cm) of snow across a wide swath of the Mid-Atlantic region and could "paralyze the eastern third of the nation", and regarded it as a "potentially historic blizzard". A weather system, evolving from a shortwave trough that formed in the Pacific Northwest on January 19, consolidated into a defined low-pressure area on January 21 over Texas. Dying Light 2 performance, testedĮnough with settings and system requirements - let’s talk performance! It’s rare to find games that feel next-gen on PC, but Dying Light 2 fits the bill. You can reach the performance bars set by the system requirements, but it looks like Techland factored in the aggressive Performance mode for DLSS, not the Quality or Balanced modes. Based on my testing, the recommendations are just a little underpowered. Techland recommends the eight-core Ryzen 7 3700X for the top spec, but a six-core chip like the Ryzen 5 5600X will work just as well.įor graphics cards, Techland is leaning heavily on DLSS. A decent quad-core from the past few generations will get you by, though a six-core CPU is ideal. You need something like DLSS.įor the other system requirements, most of them check out. Ray tracing is incredibly demanding in Dying Light 2. It’s beautiful, but impossible to run at native resolution. The system requirements have some interesting quirks, though.Īll of the three ray tracing presets call for Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), and there’s a reason for that, as I’ll dig into in the following sections. At minimum, you’ll need a GTX 1050 Ti, and if you want ray tracing and 4K, you’ll need at least an RTX 3080. Like Back 4 Bloodand a number of other games released over the past year, Dying Light 2 has five different lists of system requirements. Dying Light 2 system requirements Image used with permission by copyright holder If you need motion blur, leave the setting at low. I always turn motion blur off, and I recommend you do so in Dying Light 2. Turning off motion blur not only looks a lot better, but it can also increase your frame rate by around 8%. The other interesting note is motion blur. The game looks much flatter, and there isn’t a big difference in performance between the low setting and turning off ambient occlusion entirely. I wouldn’t recommend turning ambient occlusion off. I was content to turn ambient occlusion down to low because the visual change isn’t as stark. I left fog quality at medium because the low setting really tarnishes the atmosphere. The other important settings are ambient occlusion and fog quality, which both brought about a 10% increase in average frame rate. Image used with permission by copyright holder Reflections are important, render mode is the most demanding setting based on my testing. Simply switching to DirectX 12 brought back an extra frame, while reflection quality brought nearly a 13% increase in my average frame rate. Dying Light 2 is more taxing than most games, though, so I pushed some settings down to low.įor easy wins, change the render mode to DirectX 12 and bump reflection quality down to low. Normally, I try to find a balance between image quality and performance, which generally leads to a mix of medium and high settings. I ignored ray tracing for these settings to get a baseline. Countersunk Screw HeadsĬountersunk screw heads feature an angular shape under the head of the screw. The large variety of screw heads are categorized as countersunk screws or non countersunk screws. Having so many options available is perfect for being able to find a screw that is going to fit your specific application. The slotted screw and Phillips head are typically the most universally used in the United States. With there being disadvantages to this screw head, manufacturers set out to create screws with heads that have better functionality for a wider range of applications and industries. Although it is commonly used, the screw head can be easily damaged and the blade of the screwdriver can easily slip out of the slotted head. This screw is used with a flathead screwdriver. The oldest and one of the most common screw heads is slotted. To help you better understand what screws are the perfect fit for your next job, Fasteners Plus is here to give a clear explanation of the screw heads and drive types available. Each screw head and drive style is unique and recommended for different applications. See Monroe’s Screws. When starting a new construction project, choosing the type of screw to use is essential. Some companies use them in the United States as well, but they are predominantly used in Canada. With that said, Robertson screws are most commonly used in Canada. It’s slightly tapered, allowing for easy installation. The downside to using double hex screws, however, is that their heads are more susceptible to slippage, as well as damage, than those other types of screws with different drive systems.Īlso known as Scrulox, the Robertson drive is characterized by square-shaped ridges on the head. With twice the ridges, they allow for greater torque during installation. Basically, double hex screws feature two pairs of hexagonal ridges on the head. In addition to single hex, another common type of screw drive is double hex. Torx screws are often used during the production of computer components and other electronics. Thanks to its star-shaped head, it provides an exceptional amount of torque during installation. The Torx drive was created to increase torque. The head essentially has six ridges with rounded points. The hexalobular socket drive, or what’s more commonly known as the Torx drive, features star-shaped ridges on the head. They can be installed using a hex wrench, which like screwdrivers, is inserted into the screw’s head. Hex screws live up to their namesake by featuring hexagonal ridges on their head. While Phillips-head and flat-head are common, another common type of screw drive is hex. The two ridges, both of which run horizontally and on the same plane, allow for the insertion of a flat-head screwdriver. Flat-head screws are similar to Phillips-head screws, except they only have two ridges on the head rather than four. #2) Flat-HeadĪlso known as a slot drive, a flat-head screw lives up to its namesake by supporting the use of a flat-head screwdriver. Phillips-head screws feature a cross-shaped pattern on the head in which the screwdriver is inserted. Thompson, it offers a high level of torque to achieve quick and easy installation. So, what are the most common types of screw drives?Īrguably, the most common type of screw drive is Phillips head. Upon placing a compatible screwdriver into the screw’s head and turning it, the screw will dig into the workpiece. The drive system of a screw generally consists of ridges in the screw’s head. To install a screw into a workpiece, you must force it into the workpiece using its drive system. Screws require the use of a drive system for installation. |
